"I can't just be idle. I like to have fun, go to the movies, play pool, go bowling... just be active. I think I'm more like a little child and enjoy innocent fun."

| She gained an instant buzz in the music business after Missy Elliott took her on as her protg and agreed to help work on her album. When Tweet's debut single "Oops (Oh My)," was released in early 2002, it lived up to the hype and has remained a steady fixture on the pop, R&B and video charts ever since. |

| As the purveyor of the best female masturbation song since Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop," it's hard for us not to like her. Oh, and being beautiful and talented doesn't hurt either. |

Despite naming her hit album Southern Hummingbird, Charlene Keys (a.k.a. Tweet) was actually born thirty years ago in Rochester, New York. Her early childhood days are filled with memories of a very religious, very large family. She was the youngest of five children born to her gospel singer parents.
In that household, all the children were encouraged to pursue music and her siblings soon found proficiency at the bass, guitar, piano, drums, and trumpet. For the baby of the family, her voice would be her instrument and she would get to show it off every Sunday at the local church, as a member of the choir.
Though it would stand to logic that her infamous moniker "Tweet" would come as some reference to her early resemblances to a songbird, it actually has no base in singing or anything for that matter.
"I've been Tweet since I was a little girl," recalls Miss Keys. "It's a nickname. Everybody in my family now wants to claim that they named me that. No one knows why. It's been Tweet forever though."
Whether it was intended or not, the destiny of her nickname began to take hold following her graduation from a Fame-style performing arts high school. She started hitting the local audition circuit in Rochester, and quickly learned that it takes more than natural talent to succeed in the music industry; a little bit of luck and good fortune is almost as important.
She may not have known it at the time, but that little bit of luck came in 1994 when a young female producer named Missy Elliott came to town looking for musicians to join an all-girl group called Sugar. Tweet easily breezed through the audition and found herself becoming a member of a new girl group, and a friend to the young Ms. Elliott. The two made a major impression on each other, but unfortunately went down two very different paths.
Missy was a talent like no one had ever seen, and by 1997 she had made it with her chart-topping debut album. Tweet was working with a clichd girl group (that Missy had washed her hands of years ago) and was signed into an extremely heavy handed and binding contract that kept promising an album, but never came through. Instead the girls were left in a sort of limbo where they weren't permitted to work on any other projects, but couldn't really put any work into the current project either. She was depressed and ready to give up on her dreams. |
