Patricia Lynn Yearwood was born on September 19, 1964, in small-town Monticello, Georgia. She began singing in local talent shows, choral groups and musical productions as a child.
Following graduation from high school, she initially attended the University of Georgia, but in 1985, relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, after enrolling in the music business program at Belmont College. In 1987, she married Christopher Latham, and they divorced in 1991.
While in Nashville, Yearwood took on an internship at MTM Records, and quickly emerged as a sought-after demo-recording singer for local publishers and songwriters, as her distinctive voice became increasingly in demand. In 1989, she was hired as a background vocalist for newcomer Garth Brooks, and lent her vocal talent to his first two albums.
A 1990 showcase performance resulted in a recording contract with MCA Nashville. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1991, spawned her first No. 1 Country single, "She's In Love With The Boy," as well as three additional Top 10 hits, thanks in part to the exposure she gained as the opening act for Brooks' 1991 concert tour. The album went on to reach double-platinum status, and she was named Top New Female Vocalist of the Year at the Academy Of Country Music Awards ceremony.
Hearts In Armor, Yearwood's critically acclaimed second album, was issued in 1992, and contained two Top 5 singles, including "Walkaway Joe," a duet with Don Henley of the Eagles. It also went platinum.
The Song Remembers When, released in 1993, contained the No. 2 title track, and became Yearwood's third consecutive million-album seller.
In 1994, Trisha Yearwood won her first Grammy for "I Fall To Pieces" with Aaron Neville, in the category of Best Country Vocal Collaboration. She also wed for a second time, marrying Robert Reynolds, The Mavericks' bassist, in May. Like her first marriage, however, that relationship would also end in divorce, some five years later. On a sweeter note, The Sweetest Gift, a collection of Christmas songs and seasonal favorites, merited gold status with sales of half a million copies that same year. |
