Tracy Bonham was born on September 20, 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts, but she was raised in Eugene, Oregon. Her father, Donald, was the city editor of The Eugene Register and died when Tracy was 2 years old. Her mother, Lee, later remarried, so Tracy now has eight half- and step-siblings.
She started singing when she was 5 and began playing the violin at 9. Tracy won a violin scholarship to the music school at the University of Southern California, where she spent two rigorous years in classical training.
In 1987, Tracy relocated to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music. Finding it less challenging than USC, Tracy soon fell in with a destructive crowd, dropped out of school and worked at the Famous Atlantic Fish Company. But Tracy eventually eased back into music, although she felt that classical music was not for her after all. She began writing her own rock songs in the early 1990s, and released an EP, The Liverpool Sessions, in 1995. The disc was a hit, garnering her Boston Music Awards for Best New Artist, Best Female Vocalist and Best Indie Single, and kicking up a whirlwind of major-label interest. |
