| "I Do," the first single from her self-titled debut album, was an instant hit, grabbing the #2 spot on singles sales and getting heavy radio and television play throughout the summer of 2001. Toya's next single, "No Matta What (Party All Night)," proved that she was no one-hit wonder, prompting many to call her R&B's next "it" girl. |

| Toya is a much-needed breath of fresh air in the played-out sphere of mass-marketed young divas. While a powerful voice and songwriting prowess should suffice for ephemeral accolades, the fact that Toya also boasts a distinct sound makes her a candidate for longtime success. Given her talents, it seems that Toya will be around for the long run, and given her looks, that prospect doesn't bother us in the least. |

Although the state of North Dakota has its rightful claim as her 1983 birthplace, it's Missouri, and specifically the city of St. Louis, that has profitted from being the longtime residence of Toya Rodriguez. One of three girls born to a Puerto Rican father and an African-American mother, Toya was named after LaToya Jackson, one of the many singers that emerged from the famed Jackson clan.
In keeping with this early indication of the path her life would take, Toya began pursuing her own musical career, albeit at the time unwittingly, from a young age. By the time she was three, Toya was a regular member of the choir of the St. Louis New Greater Baptist Church, and by the ripe age of four, she was leading the group.
While her family, and indeed the city community at large, could not overlook Toya's innate vocal talents, the Rodriguez parents prioritized their daughter's schooling above any prospects of a musical career. Beginning with the Mary Institute Country Day School, Toya was educated entirely in private institutions, a financial investment that proved worthwhile, given Toya's strong work ethic and consistently high marks.
Yet even while maintaining her position at the top of the class, Toya continued to nurture her voice on the side. Along with performing the national anthem at high-school football and basketball games, Toya was a staple at local talent shows, and she soon became immersed in the St. Louis music scene through her friendship with a local producer, Harold Guy. |
