| The Pipettes are the missing link between Phil Spector and modern-day, popular music. “We've obviously got all the late ‘50s and early ‘60s girl-bands as a starting point,” Rose Pipette admits, “but around that, there's stuff before and all the way up to now that kind of filters through.” That includes a nod and wink to more modern genres like alternative rock 'n' roll. |

The Pipettes were formed in Brighton, England in 2003 when a local guitarist named Monster Bobby came up with the idea of fusing ‘60s pop with modern indie-rock. The idea clicked with many of his peers and, within weeks, he had successfully formed a seven-person band featuring four male musicians known as The Cassettes and three female vocalists known as The Pipettes.
The group’s original three front-women were Becki, Rose and Julia Pipette, three promising young singers who joined the group on something of a lark. “We just started the band and thought ‘Oh, this is a bit of fun, isn’t it?’” Becki recalls. “And then, when people started liking it, that took us a bit by surprise.”
Luckily, Monster Bobby had anticipated the positive response and followed up the initial interest in the group with a steady stream of gigs. In fact, the group’s only major setback during that period was the loss of Julia, who decided to leave the group in 2005 to join the controversial indie-band, The Indelicates. |
