"When I write lyrics, I'm thinking about all of us. I wouldn't write something that would be untrue for any of the other girls. Not that they've been through everything I've been through, but that if they went through it, they would react in somewhat the same way. I think the other ones think that way when they write lyrics."

| On the fringe of the mainstream for some time, the Donnas put together a string of solid albums, from the unpolished American Teenage Rock 'n' Roll Machine (1998) and Get Skintight (1999) to the success of Gold Medal (2004). The ladies have matured both musically and physically, becoming the hard-core, attractive princesses of true rock 'n' roll. |
 |
| The Donnas went from rebellious, "smoking in the girls' room"-type teen rockers to a fine-tuned rock band with a lot to say. What the band lost in the raw sound of its adolescence, it gained in experience, producing a sound influenced by the Ramones, Rolling Stones, Beatles, and Sex Pistols. There aren't many successful bands with this old-school mentality, so we hope the Donnas keep on rocking. |

All born in 1979 in Palo Alto, California, Allison Robertson (born August 26), Torry Castellano (born January 8), Maya Ford (born January 8), and Brett Anderson (born May 30) became friends in junior high. The four fed off of each other's rebelliousness and love of classic rock music, which led to them forming a band known as Raggedy Anne in May 1993.
Without any formal musical training, the girls began practicing guitar, drums and vocals every day after school. One month after forming, they joined a "battle of the bands" contest at school and continued practicing during their senior year.
None of the bandmates were willing to further their studies after high school and so, the band lived on, signing with a local label called Radio Trash.
After releasing a 7" EP, the quartet changed its image and name to the Electrocutes, adopting a loud, fast-paced style of rock. They continued to sing about boys, booze, parents, and other high school issues, but were now much more in-your-face.
During one of their many gigs in the Bay Area, a man by the name of Darin Raffaelli approached and encouraged them to join his Radio X label. Raffaelli had written many songs that would fit right into the Electrocutes' image, so the four girls eventually signed on. |
