Born May 9th, 1975, in Windsor, Ontario, Tamia Washington began her quest towards stardom at an early age. When she was ten, she studied music and drama, which in turn, led to her performing in local choirs and theatrical productions.
While earning herself a reputation as a talented performer, she began to receive more and more exposure in the Canadian entertainment market. Then, in 1993, Tamia was the recipient of the YTV Vocal Achievement Award. This was a crucial step in the early beginnings of her career, serving as a stepping stone into the international market, most importantly the United States.
The following year, she found herself on the receiving end of yet another prestigious award: the Steve Ross Music Scholarship at the American Academy of Achievement's Annual Salute to Excellence (and yes, that is quite the mouthful).
That very same year, Tamia lucked out by finding herself in the right place at the right time. While attending a party for Luther Vandross, held by her manager, she befriended the almighty Quincy Jones. Enthralled by her talent and beauty, Quincy granted her a spot on his latest album at the time, Q's Jook Joint.
By the end of 1994, Tamia had recorded two tracks for the album: "You Put a Move on My Heart" and a duet with Babyface entitled "Slow Jams." The former earned Tamia a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and the latter a nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group.
Shortly thereafter, in 1995, Tamia expanded her musical horizons by joining Brandy, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan on "Missing You," recorded for the soundtrack to the film Set It Off. While still reeling from her previous two Grammy nominations, the track granted Tamia a third nomination in the Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals category. |
