"We're doing what we want to do more than anything in the world, and we're doing it together."
-Soluna
|
 |
| Soluna has made a strong first foray into the mainstream music business with two chart-making singles -- "For All Time" and "Bring It To Me" -- and a strong debut LP. |
 |
| A quartet of gorgeous and talented ladies, they are a force to be reckoned with by any measure. |

Soluna began its formation at The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 1997, when voice student Aurora Rodriguez befriended one America Olivo, a fellow member of the school's Latin Jazz Ensemble. The two hit it off and remained tight, even when America left for a two-year stint at New York's prestigious Julliard School.
Upon her return, Aurora and America resumed singing together, and even met a third partner, Jessica Castellanos, through a mutual friend. Resigned to the idea of a four-person group because it would allow for "more intricate and more different" harmonies, they then found Christina "T" Lopez thanks to a producer friend of Jessica's, and Soluna was born.
Not that they called themselves by that name right away. When the group was signed to DreamWorks Records in late 1999, they were so new that they didn't have a name, but they soon settled on "Soluna" -- a combination of the Spanish words for sun and moon -- because it reflects their unique combination of fiery dance tunes and mellow ballads.
The events of September 11th affected the girls' initiation into the record business substantially. Despite their top ten dance/club hit "Bring It To Me" (released summer 2001), they decided to postpone the release date of their album and change the lead radio single to the title track, "For All Time," a ballad. In December of 2001, they also recorded a charity single, "Espiritu De America."
For All Time was finally released in May 2002, and was an immediate success. The talent of the group was readily apparent; although the album was produced by a who's who of top-notch producers (from Ricky Martin's to TLC's), five of the album's songs were co-written and co-arranged by the ladies themselves. They further displayed their unique talents by totally avoiding the use of voice-altering technology, which tunes and tweaks the pitches of nearly every star on the charts. The originality paid off, as For All Time was ranked #77 out of the Top 100 albums of the year by Radio & Records. |
