Sleater-Kinney’s story begins with Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. Corin was born on November 9th, 1972, in Eugene, Oregon. Carrie was born two years later, on September 27th, 1974, in Seattle, Washington. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, both girls began singing and playing guitar -- mostly just for fun -- when they were still teenagers.
Corin and Carrie first met in 1992 at a concert put on by Corin’s then-band, Heavens to Betsy, in Bellingham, Washington, where Carrie was living. The next fall, Carrie began studying sociolinguistics at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, which, coincidentally, Corin was also attending, taking courses in film, political economy, and social change. There, the two renewed their friendship, and by 1994, they were roommates in a duplex where they put together a “riot grrl” band, fusing punk rock and gender politics.
Corin suggested they call themselves “Sleater-Kinney,” which was the name of a road in the nearby town of Lacey where she and Carrie had previously found a rehearsal space. |
