| Shirley Manson is what we call, hardcore. Everything she does, from her songs and her lyrics to her life has her 100% effort and attention. We like that in a woman. |

Lead singer of Garbage, Shirley Manson was born on the 26th of August 1966. As a young child growing up in Edinburgh, Scotland, the skinny lass was often teased for her now trademark bright, red hair. Not leading a happy childhood, Shirley was nicknamed "bloodhound" and "frog-eyes," which contributed to her desire to drop out of high school.
By the time she was a teenager, a bitter Shirley delved into the rock star world (prematurely, at least) of sex and drugs. But amid her unhappiness, Shirley found pleasure in music and became passionate about it, thanks to musical influences such as The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde.
Shirley was a member of several rock bands, including August 1984, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie (for which she sang backup) and Angelfish. Lead vocalist of the latter, Shirley was discovered by Garbage founders Bryan "Butch" Vig and Steve Marker when Angelfish's video for "Suffocate Me" appeared for a single time on MTV's 120 Minutes. Vig and Marker, along with guitarist Doug "Duke" Erikson, were searching for a band identity, and found just that in the fiery vocalist.
The three musicians who dubbed themselves Garbage, met with Shirley Manson in London on the day that Kurt Cobain died (ironically, Vig was one of the producers of Nevermind, which opened the doors to alternative rock).
Incidentally, Angelfish was on the brink of breaking up, paving Shirley's way to Garbage. Next thing she knew, she was in Wisconsin recording with the band. It took a while for the band's success to take off, but it finally did in 1995, with the release of their debut single, "Vow". Gaining popularity before the release of their self-titled debut album, "Vow" only kept its promise to deliver one of the best albums of the year. |
