What makes her so famous?
In addition to being one of the Windy City’s leading MCs, Shawnna is also the first lady of Def Jam related record label, Disturbing Tha Peace Records. Prior to joining Ludacris’s fledging label, this sultry Chicago native was a member of Infamous Syndicate.
Why we adore her..., as we do?
Coming from a musically gifted parent doesn’t always ensure commercial success. Just ask Julian Lennon or Ziggy Marley. Luckily, Shawnna has managed to break that mold. The daughter of blues master Buddy Guy, Shawnna has been rocking the mic since her Def Jam debut in 2004. Aggressive yet sexy, she knows how to bring a crowd to its knees thanks to her trademark rapid-fire delivery and street savvy lyrics.
Biography
Rashawnna Guy was born October 1, 1979 in Chicago, Illinois. The daughter of blues legend Buddy Guy, Shawnna recalls growing up in a house bustling with music. "When I was three years old, he used to put me on his lap and play," she says. “Coming up like that was great because he was the most down to earth dude alive.”

Despite Buddy’s musical influence, Shawnna ultimately shied away from the blues. "In high school, everybody wanted to be a rapper -- that's when Wu-Tang happened, Jigga was coming up, Biggie, Pac,” she says. “It was everywhere." Shawnna happily followed suit by creating the rap group Infamous Syndicate in 1996 with fellow Chicagoan gal Lateefa Harland. “I had met Lateefa through a mutual friend,” she recalls. ‘We would rap at any party, any subway... and any restaurant. You can get professional artists who are shocked on the spot to rap or perform, you know. We would just go at it.”

The remarkable talent and chemistry of the two girls was obvious to all who attended their shows and within a year of performing they were signed by Relativity Records. The Syndicates' debut album, Changing the Game, was released on July 2, 1999 and featured Buddy’s guitar on several tracks. However, despite the all-star pairing, the album was met with disappointing sales and the group was not resigned when Relativity Records was later bought out by Loud Records.

Down, but certainly not out, Shawnna found an influential supporter in Def Jam South's Vice President, Chaka Zulu. "She blew me away when I first saw her rap," Zulu fondly recalls. Clearly impressed, Zulu quickly signed her to a contract and within weeks, Shawnna was dropping a verse on Ludacris’ sexy mega hit single, “What’s Your Fantasy.”
