Ana Lynch, born on January 4, 1974, has always been a performance vixen. Growing up in a flamboyant part of San Francisco, Ana was always drawn to the gay world. At the age of 14, her father died of AIDS, 11 years after coming out as a homosexual. Thereafter, Ana claimed that the company of gay men makes her feel closer to the father she had lost, one reason she began hosting her own raucous cabaret night at a club in New York's East Village.
At around the same time, 19-year-old creative writing student Jake Shears met multi-instrumentalist Babydaddy. Together, they launched into an frenzy of songwriting, melding Elton John's flamboyance with David Bowie's sexual ambiguity and a pinch of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's kitsch.
Shears and Babydaddy named their band Scissor Sisters (after a sexual position favored by lesbians) and began playing gigs, starting with one at Ana Matronic's club in September of 2001. That's when Ana was converted. She joined the band as a supporting vocalist immediately. Guitarist Del Marquis and drummer Patrick Seacor, a.k.a. Paddy Boom, made the fivesome complete.
After spending two years refining their cuckoo sound, the Sisters finally broke out of the Big Apple's live circuit and began taking the Northeastern corridor. Small crowds gradually swelled into packed halls as people got wind of the kind of performance they could expect. |
