| Sara Evans symbolizes the new breed of country music diva -- rooted in tradition with mainstream pop appeal. |
 |
| While other performers have achieved fame with smoke and mirrors, Sara Evans has done it with her voice. Her debut album, Three Chords And The Truth, made countless Top 10 lists in 1997. By the time Born To Fly was recorded, Sara Evans was established as an elite member of the Music City stable of hot young performers. |

Born in Boonville, Missouri (pop. 1200) on February 5, 1971, Evans grew up on a tobacco farm and started singing at age four in a family bluegrass band. To earn extra money for the family, Sara fronted a band with her brothers as she matured and her talent became apparent. The boys backed her up on guitar, bass and banjo.
The siblings played American Legion Halls, talent contests and PTA meetings. At the age of ten, Sara and her family traveled the state of Missouri in an RV painted with "The Sara Evans Show" on the side. Her love of music and dedication to her craft was evident even at a young age when she sang from a wheelchair while recuperating from an accident in which she was struck by a car.
In junior secondary school, Sara performed in a series of bands and by the age of sixteen, had begun to sing at the Country Stampede, a big dancehall near Columbia, MO.
She moved to Nashville when she was twenty and supported herself as a waitress at a Holiday Inn while she worked on her music. It was there that she encountered fellow employee Craig Schelske and later joined his family band, which enjoyed regional success in the state of Oregon.
As a result, Sara spent three years in the Pacific Northwest opening for artists such as Willie Nelson, Clay Walker and Tim McGraw. In 1993, her and Schelske wed and the two decided to make a home in Nashville in the autumn of 1995.
It did not take long for Sara to receive her first major break when songwriter Harlan Howard heard her singing his classic "I've Got A Tiger By The Tail" on a demo tape and brought her to the attention of RCA Records in 1995. His lobbying on her behalf paid off with a contract offer from RCA in 1996.
With three albums to her credit and a host of soundtrack and tribute appearances, in addition to a litany of awards and nominations, Sara Evans has become a major country music star. Yet she cites her family and firm belief in Jesus as her main priorities in life.. |
