“I can dance like a fairy and then stumble like a fool. That’s just the way it is.” -- Roisin Murphy
| Date of Birth: July 5, 1973 |

| Roisin first stepped into the spotlight as half of the musical duo Moloko; after Moloko split in 2003, Roisin forged ahead with a solo singing career. Roisin gained fame in 2005 with her debut album Ruby Blue and songs like “Sow Into You” and “The Closing of the Doors.” |

| We might find it tricky to pronounce her name, but that’s about all we can think of that’s bad about Roisin Murphy. Her quirky personality, striking looks and enthralling voice all add up to a woman we could dance the night away to -- and dance it away with. |

Roisin Murphy was born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 5, 1973. She was brought up in the nearby resort town of Arklow, further south down Ireland’s eastern coast. When Roisin was 12, her family moved to Manchester, England. Roisin took pride in not fitting in, and it was during that time that she first became obsessed with music, particularly that of Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Meanwhile, following her mother, an antiques dealer, around Northern England influenced Roisin’s fashion taste.
When Roisin was 16, her family moved back to Ireland, but Roisin stayed behind, renting out her own apartment. She felt that she could be independent and get away from an unreliable home life. “My family are all mad,” she later admitted, “but I got a lot of strength from them.”
Roisin spent considerable time in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the British club scene. At one party in Sheffield, she met musician Mark Brydon; the first thing she asked him was, “Do you like my tight sweater?” The line led to a romantic relationship, and soon after, Roisin and Brydon teamed up as a musical duo named Moloko. Their first album, released in 1995, was called Do You Like My Tight Sweater?.
Moloko gained an underground following for its experimental electronic sound. A second album, I Am Not a Doctor, came in 1998, followed by Things to Make and Do in 2000. As the face and voice of Moloko, Roisin benefited from the duo’s good press and moderate chart success. She also sang for other artists, such as Handsome Boy Modeling School and Boris Dlugosch; the latter’s No. 3 club hit, “Never Enough,” featured Roisin.
Roisin's and Brydon's romantic relationship ended by 2003, but they were contractually obligated to produce one more album, Statues (2003), and go on tour. They received commercial success with this album despite the expected personal tensions. Once that was over, Roisin returned to London, where she had relocated earlier, to take stock of her life and career. |
