What makes her so famous?
Singer/songwriter/pianist Regina Spektor is hardly famous (yet), but the buzz around her is growing thanks to her connection with New York's East Village anti-folk scene, and her 2003 North American tour opening for music critic darlings The Strokes.
Why we adore her..., as we do?
Regina Spektor's unique and unusual sound is reflective of her apparent lack of interest in becoming an immensely popular, million-copy selling diva. The New York City-based musician is content in courting discerning fans of original music, who aren't into seeking out the next big thing.
Biography
Regina Spektor was born in Moscow, Russia, on February 18, 1980. She began learning to play the piano when she was 6, studying classical music and listening to classic rock like The Beatles and Queen (courtesy of her father's collection of cassettes). She and her family moved from what was then still the Soviet Union during the Perestroika era. After stopping off in Austria and Italy, the Spektors eventually settled in the Bronx, New York, in 1989.

Regina continued to pursue her studies in classical music with Sonia Vargas, a professor at the Manhattan School of Music, despite the fact that her family had neither a piano nor the money to pay for her for lessons. She soon began developing a knack for coming up with her own melodies, often without musical accompaniment.

It was during a trip to Israel as a teenager that Regina first gained notice, albeit hardly widespread, for her spontaneous songwriting ability. As she continually made up original songs during hiking expeditions, her budding talents attracted the attention of her companions.

Upon her return to the U.S., Regina was exposed to the music of other female songwriters like Ani DiFranco and Joan Baez, further inspiring her to compose her own songs.

In 1998, she enrolled in the conservatory of music at SUNY Purchase College in Purchase, New York. While there, she encountered other students who were involved in the Lower East Side's "anti-folk" scene. She began performing her own original works in clubs like the East Village's Sidewalk Cafe, and graduated from the conservatory in 2001.
