 |
| Reba McEntire was the top female country star of the 1980s, scoring seven platinum-selling albums and No. 1 singles like "Can't Even Get the Blues," "Whoever's in New England" and "New Fool at an Old Game." |
 |
| Like the theme song to her hit TV series suggests, Reba McEntire is a true survivor. As her popularity on the country music charts wanes with the years, she continues to involve herself in projects that have helped rejuvenate her career. |

Reba Nell McEntire was born on March 28, 1955, in McAlester, Oklahoma. As children, she and the other McEntire siblings, Pake, Alice and Susie, were taught how to ride in rodeos by their father Clark, a rancher and rodeo steer roper. They were also taught music and how to sing in harmony by their mother, Jackie. The vocal quartet scored a local hit in 1971 with "The Ballad of John McEntire," a musical tribute to their grandfather (who had been a world-champion steer roper).
In 1974, following her moving rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" at the National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City, Reba was encouraged to move to Nashville and pursue a solo career. Although initially apprehensive about abandoning her singing siblings, she ultimately decided to make the move.
Reba was signed by Mercury Records in 1975, and released her first single later that year. She married Charlie Battles, a professional steer wrestler, in June of 1976, the same year that she completed her degree in Elementary Education (her safety net in case of a failed music career).
The hard honky-tonk sound that Reba started out failed to catch on at first. After releasing several singles, however, she landed her first hit in 1978 with "Three Sheets in the Wind." It would take her another two years to score another major hit, when "(You Lift Me) Up to Heaven" reached the Top 10 in 1980. |
