"Keeping an objective point of view on your own life can be pretty nerve-racking. And so, a lot of my songs have different versions, depending on my mood."
-Rachael Yamagata
Date of Birth: April 4, 1978
Birthplace: Arlington, Virginia

Rachael followed up a long run with Chicago funk/hip-hop band Bumpus and a self-titled solo EP with the album Happenstance, a collection of her soulful, eloquently-written piano ballads. Released in June of 2004, this full-length recording featured a slew of soothing hits, including "I'll Find A Way" and "Worn Me Down," and it became a steady seller as a result of Rachael's extensive touring.

A smooth-singing, soulful artist, Rachael Yamagata is leaving an unmistakable mark on the indie/blues genre with her edgy music. Though many critics have compared her to Norah Jones, Yamagata would rather that you think of her as a cross between Janis Joplin and Fiona Apple; an introspective artist with a rebellious attitude.

Born on April 4, 1978, in Arlington, Virginia, Rachael Yamagata led a transient life from a young age. Her father, a lawyer of Japanese decent, and mother, a German-Italian painter, divorced when Rachael was 2. For Rachael, one of the consequences of the split was frequent commutes from her mother's apartment in New York City to her father's place in Maryland.
Initially attracted to a career in acting, Rachael first attended Northwestern University in Chicago, then Vassar, then Northwestern again, studying French, Italian and opera in addition to her theatrical pursuits. Eventually, at the age of 19, Rachael was kicked out of her acting classes, but she decided to stay in Chicago after falling for the hypnotic grooves of a local funk/hip-hop band called Bumpus.
Though Rachael's musical experience at that time consisted only of a brief seventh-grade stint as a piano student and some university vocal lessons, she felt drawn toward the craft and begged the band to employ her in any way possible. First, Bumpus took her on as a tambourine girl. As she showed early signs of a great voice, however, Rachael was given a new role as backup singer, then was finally assigned one of three lead vocal spots.
For six years Rachael toiled with Bumpus, helping them to develop a strong local following as well as some underground notoriety outside of the city. As the urge to write her own music and fully explore her vocal range grew stronger, however, Rachael felt constricted by her bandmates. In 2001, she left the band and began seeking out a solo career. |
