"If I was trying to sell albums, I wouldn't have called the album Fatherf***er."
-Peaches
|
 |
| Like Marilyn Manson and Alice Cooper, Peaches says and does a lot of crazy things... maybe enough to break her out from the underground. With sex as the dominant subject on her albums The Teaches of Peaches (2000) and Fatherf***er (2003), Peaches has cultivated a strong following. Whether she'll bring her wild show more into the public eye remains to be seen. |
 |
| Lewd, crude and provocative, Peaches is an in-your-face gender-bending artist. Her music -- an interesting (to put it lightly) mix of hip-hop, rock and electronica -- tells only half the story. Peaches is an entertainer, one who injects enough shock into her show that she may just convert you into a fan. |

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Peaches grew up to be a children's music teacher who went by her real name, Merrill Nisker. Merrill stuck with this job for a while, before finally leaving when she realized that she would only be satisfied with a music career.
While rooming with fellow aspiring singer Leslie Feist, Merrill thought up the persona Peaches, an alter ego that embodied all the energy and angst she had bottled up. Having quit her job, Merrill assumed her new identity and, with a meager recording budget, began making tracks. Using only a simple Roland beatbox to accompany her wailing vocals, Peaches recorded a few songs and set out to get her new name known.
Peaches gradually made some contacts, which led to an appearance on a Chilly Gonzalez album (Gonzalez, another wild underground performer, would later return the favor). With this initial recording experience and some small venue performances under her belt, Berlin's Kitty-Yo label signed her.
This new funding helped Peaches produce her full-length debut, The Teaches of Peaches, in 2000 (the album saw widespread release in 2002). Solely written and produced by Peaches, the disc, filled with loud, explosive rants about feminism and sex, shocked anyone who dared to listen. Extensive touring in small venues across North America and Europe raised her popularity in the underground -- the British publication Boyz called her the best live act of the year. Though fans never would hear her on the radio, they blasted Peaches in their cars and requested her tracks at clubs, expanding the artist's reach strictly by word of mouth. |
