What makes her so famous?
Paula's second album, This Fire (1996) put her on the musical map with smash hits like "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?," "Me" and "I Don't Want To Wait," which also became the theme song for the series Dawson's Creek.
Why we adore her..., as we do?
Paula Cole has grown musically, lyrically and personally with each successive album release. The singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist wore pain and anger on her sleeve for her first couple of releases, and re-emerged with a more spiritually uplifting album as the decade drew to a close.
Biography
Paula Cole was born on April 5th, 1968 in Rockport, a small fishing village in coastal Massachusetts. Her mother was a visual artist, while her father was an entomologist who played bass in a polka band. Music was an essential ingredient in the Cole household, although the family rarely listened to the radio or records. Instead, they made their own music, whether at home in the kitchen or while out driving in the car. Paula took up the piano and clarinet at an early age.

During her high school years, Cole was a straight-A student, three-time class president, and junior Homecoming Queen. She went on to study improvisation and jazz vocals at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she also sang with the gospel choir. She began to write her own music, poetry and prose, and relocated to New York City in 1993.

Cole's first big break came when she replaced Sinead O'Connor on Peter Gabriel's world tour in 1993. She appeared on Gabriel's Secret World Live album, released in 1994, and eventually signed a deal with Imago Records, an independent label. Her first release, a single entitled "I Am So Ordinary," was quickly followed with her debut album, Harbinger, in July 1994. Her label went out of business not long after the album's release, and Warner Brothers soon snapped her up. The label re-issued Harbinger in October 1995.

Cole toured to support the album's rerelease, gaining experience before larger audiences as the opening act for Melissa Etheridge, Sarah McLachlan and Peter Gabriel. She returned to the studio in 1996 to record her next album, which she also produced. This Fire, released that October, would go on to sell over two million copies. The album produced her first major hit, the infectious "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?," which peaked at number six on Billboard's airplay charts during the spring of 1997.

Cole and her backup band hit the road to promote the album for the better part of two years. They toured alongside McLachlan, Etheridge, Fiona Apple, Jewel, and Joan Osborne as part of the line-up for the first Lilith Fair Tour in 1997, and again in '98. She had another hit with "I Don't Want To Wait," a song that became familiar to viewers of Dawson's Creek, as it was the theme to the popular WB series. It spent 11 months on Billboard's Hot 100 listing, peaking at number five on the airplay chart early in 1998.
