Born on the 24th of March 1982, in Atlanta, Georgia, Nivea B. Hamilton heard her calling in life at 7 years old. While watching an episode of The Arsenio Hall Show, Nivea became entranced by the beauty and on-stage performance of (then) up-and-coming pop star, Mariah Carey.
Carey's live rendition of "Vision of Love" left the young Nivea in awe of the gifted songstress. Soon afterward, Nivea purchased Mariah's album and found herself performing each and every song in front of her bedroom mirror. At the time, the mirror was her only audience, but it helped to fuel Nivea's passion to one day follow in the footsteps of her newfound idol.
The one factor that stood in her way, however, was her overwhelming shyness. In an effort to assist her young daughter to overcome this obstacle, Nivea's mom persuaded her to sing in the Gospel choir. Although this helped Nivea showcase her beautiful voice, she still shied away from opportunities to perform as a solo act. Her fear of performing even kept her away from talent shows. Instead, Nivea relied on her participation in the church choir to help develop her soulful voice.
Throughout her early teenage years, Nivea's talent as a performer grew, while her stage fright slowly began to subside. At 15 years old, her fascination with R&B music escalated, along with her admiration for another emerging superstar: the late Aaliyah. She began to idolize the R&B beauty for her beauty, talent, and most of all, her presence in the mainstream music world. It was at this point that she convinced herself that if Aaliyah could do it, so could she.
Shortly thereafter, Nivea was introduced to Colin Lampkin, a recording studio owner from the Atlanta area. He recognized her talent immediately and decided to dedicate himself to managing her career on a full-time basis. A combination of Nivea's talent and persistence, mixed with Lampkin's industry contacts and methods of persuasion, enabled the young starlet to spend an ample amount of time in the studio recording her demo. During this time, she found herself working on new material and recording demos along with some of Atlanta's top producers. This premature exposure to the music biz helped Nivea break out of her shell and develop her skills as a true performer. |
