Born in 1986, just a few minutes apart, Nicole and Natalie Albino, of Puerto Rican descent, grew up in a multicultural corner of Queens, New York, where they were exposed to a flurry of different influences.
Raised by a mother and a stepfather who made a living as a disc jockey, music was always being played in their household. From rock and jazz to pop, all styles were adequately represented as the siblings were exposed to music from around the world.
Singing came as naturally to them as talking. When they were 7, they put their heads together and wrote their first song called "Sisters." So it was no surprise when Natalie and Nicole decided at the age of 10 that they wanted a career in music.
From the start, their parents supported their decision and encouraged them to develop their passion for music. As a teenager, Nicole began playing the guitar and drums, and took lessons from her stepfather on how to be a DJ.
In their quest to make it as professional singers, the twins did it all. They went to auditions, performed in showcases, and they were also part of an all-girl band. Eventually, they decided that they'd work better as a duo.
After much consideration, they settled on calling themselves Nina Sky. The Nina part is made up of the first syllable of their respective names. Sky represents their aspirations (the sky's the limit). |
