Melissa Morrison Higgins was born on August 19, 1983, in Melbourne, Australia. She is the youngest of three children of a doctor and a childcare center operator. Missy was a quiet child, but very mischievous, and a bit of a tomboy. "By the time my parents had me," she theorizes, "they couldn't be bothered to enforce the rules anymore." Ironically, once she was a teenager, Missy pleaded with her parents to send her to boarding school, because she equated being away from home with having more freedom.
At the prestigious Geelong Grammar School, an hour's drive from Melbourne, Missy found happiness, especially when she could sneak off into the school's music room. Her father played piano and her brother played in a jazz band, and Missy herself had always had a passion for singing and piano. Influenced by grunge rock once she was in boarding school, Missy took up guitar as well; but she still played with her brother's band, lying about her age to get into local clubs. |
