"I get so into it. The only time I ever feel the same way is when I'm having sex; it's the epitome of unifying with something."
-Melissa Auf Der Maur
| Date of Birth: March 17, 1972 |
| Birthplace: Montreal, Quebec. |

|
 |
| She was the bassist for the Courtney Love-led band Hole, and for the Smashing Pumpkins right before they broke up. |
 |
| She's a rock star who might as well be the girl behind the counter at your local Starbucks. That's how down to earth she is. |

Melissa Auf Der Maur was born March 17, 1972, in Montreal, Quebec. The daughter of Linda Gaboriau, Montreal's first female rock DJ, and Nick Auf Der Maur, a Montreal personality who was a writer, radio announcer and politician, Melissa was raised to be outgoing and love bars (her late father was a local pub regular and even had a street named after him on Montreal's bar strip).
She was immersed into the music scene at an early age thanks to her mother, who would show young Melissa interviews of rock stars like Frank Zappa and author Ken Kesey, and the "spreading the word" aspect of rock and roll intrigued her.
Always the artsy type, Melissa attended F.A.C.E, a performing-arts high school. She had already taken piano and trumpet lessons and had experience as a choir singer, and she tackled the bass by teaching it to herself, thanks to a dream she had about the band Kyuss.
Rather than going shopping with the girls (although Melissa is a true fashionista and attends fashion shows pretty often), Melissa jammed with the punk band boys, with the confidence that she would make it as a bassist.
She started out pretty small, before fate took it course. She started the band Tinker with her best friend and boyfriend. With several songs to its credit and little performing experience (at least in front of big crowds), Tinker was invited to open for the Smashing Pumpkins' Montreal show in 1993.
Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan was impressed with Melissa's bass playing skills -- not to mention cool attitude -- and recommended her to Hole lead singer Courtney Love after Hole's bassist died of an overdose.
Melissa was hesitant to leave Tinker, which was on the verge of a record deal, and her life in Montreal, to play with a band that she had no initial part in. But after Courtney told her to fly down to Seattle to meet Hole, she dropped her original plans -- which included studying photography in University -- to meet her future band mates. |
