Martha Wainwright was born in New York City on May 8, 1976. She’s the daughter of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and the sister of singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. After her parents divorced, the young Martha went to live with her mother in Montreal, Canada. Martha had a turbulent relationship with her father, who could only communicate to her through his songs. When Martha was 14, she moved back to New York for a year to live with Loudon, who subsequently wrote a song about the experience, “I’d Rather Be Lonely.” “He really crossed the line there,” Martha admitted.
Martha spent her childhood exposed to a wide variety of music, and while “it wasn’t the Von Trapp family,” as Martha later reflected, the Wainwright children sang a lot, and Martha was singing on albums with her famous family members as early as age 7. Nevertheless, by her teenage years, Martha was rebelling against joining the “family business.” She wanted to be an actress, then a scholar; but after a year of university, Martha decided academia wasn’t for her after all, and she turned back to singing and songwriting. |
