Maria Viktoria Mena was born in Oslo, Norway, on February 19, 1986, to a Norwegian mother, a playwright, and an American father, a drummer. In such an artistic milieu, she was surrounded by creative influences, which would result in her misery and her glory.
Mena's parents got divorced when she was 9, which resulted in her growing up a misfit in Norway. Stricken with depression and an eating disorder, she couldn't cope with the pressures of adolescence and turned to music for her refuge.
One day, when Maria was 11, she was riding the bus with her dad and he noticed her humming a startlingly sweet melody. He asked her if it was a new hit and was surprised to hear that she had written it herself. Excited, he took her to a studio and cut a demo of the song. "My Lullaby" was her first success and caught the attention of the executives at Sony Music. The song was even widely adopted as a ringtone on many cell phones.
At 13, she went to live with her father in New York and kept writing music. She returned in 2002 and recorded Another Phase, an album filled with songs about life as an outcast in the social slog of school. It went platinum in Norway, which led to tours, TV appearances, and prize nominations. |
