I listened to Billie Holiday a lot in order to learn to sing, but my intent is to become my own voice, to be able to interpret these songs in my own way.?

| Born in Georgia, but raised on the streets of Paris, Madeleine Peyroux has achieved global fame with her nouveau-jazz albums Dreamland, Got You on My Mind, Careless Love and Half the Perfect World. "I've always loved singing," she says. "I find it exhilarating." |
 |
| Madeleine Peyroux is as timeless as her music selections. Whether belting out Billie Holiday standards or reinterpreting Hank Williams? ?Weary Blues,? this charming chanteuse infuses all of her songs with her bittersweet, alto voice. ?I'm very conscious of developing my singing, technically and stylistically,? she says. ?I want it to become more individual, express more of me.? |

Madeleine Peyroux was born January 1, 1973 in Athens, Georgia. The daughter of die-hard hippies, she grew up listening to a wide variety of musical influences. ?I discovered the folk music of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen when I was in my early teens,? she recalls. ?I was just learning to play guitar when Tracy Chapman came out. She wrote these songs, she played them by herself and I so admired her for that."
Sadly, her parents' relationship eventually disintegrated and Madeleine moved with her mother to Paris in 1987. The big move proved to be unsettling and Madeleine quickly rebelled. "I was a hormonal teen and my parents had just got divorced. I was already starting to cut school," she says. Within a matter of months, Madeleine left home altogether to embark on a life of busking in the city?s Latin Quarter.
?I was resourceful,? she says proudly. ?I had my guitar and some talent so that I could make friends with intelligent people and could talk my way out of difficult situations.? After performing on her own for a short stint, Madeleine joined a motley crew of street performers known as The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band. The group taught her about the rich history of both musical genres and she spent the next three years traveling around Europe as their principle singer. Although the experience transformed Madeleine into a bona fide chanteuse, it also wore her down. ?By the time I was 18, I was done,? she admits. ?I didn't want to live the life any more. I needed to develop past the point that busking takes you to.? |
