Lucy Woodward was born in England in 1977, and moved with her family to Amsterdam when she was three. At the age of five, her parents split up and she relocated to the Bronx with her mother. With both parents accredited musicologists, Lucy grew up surrounded by music.
She spent summers in Holland visiting her composer/conductor father (who once conducted for the BBC), learning classical music. With her mother, a music teacher who sang opera and belly danced professionally, Lucy was also raised on plenty of opera music, as well as jazz, classic soul, pop, and rock.
As a child, she learned a great deal about captivating an audience while watching her mother perform as a belly dancer, often accompanying her to gigs when babysitters were unavailable. Her mother attempted to instruct her young daughter in the art form, but Lucy preferred ballet. She learned to play the piano and flute at an early age, and started taking voice lessons at 14. She began her professional singing career at 16, and worked at a local Ben & Jerry's to help make ends meet.
Woodward found work as a session vocalist, lending her voice to various studio demos and commercial jingles. She also honed her craft by performing at coffeehouse jams, open mic nights, and singing with cover bands around New York City. She became a regular participant at weekly jam sessions at the legendary Bitter End nightclub, and at biweekly meetings of the New York songwriters' circle, where she received constructive feedback from other aspiring singer-songwriters.
By the time she was signed to Atlantic Records in 2001, Woodward was a five-year veteran of New York's studio sessions scene. During that period, she had reportedly notched up more studio time than any other newly signed recording artist of the past 10 years, and had sung on demos for just about every major songwriter in the business. This experience provided her with valuable knowledge of the recording process, which would come in handy when it came time to record her own album.
Sessions for her debut album were recorded during the second half of 2002, at Jim Henson Studios in Los Angeles. The majority of the tracks were produced by John Shanks, who had previously worked with Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks and the Corrs. Two tracks were produced by Kevin Kadish, and the album features seasoned session players who've backed artists ranging from the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton to Macy Gray, Eminem, and Destiny's Child. The original tunes were written by Woodward in collaboration with several songwriters, including those who've composed for performers like Ringo Starr, Kiss, Brandy, and Avril Lavigne. |
