"We aren't passive entities. We are instruments, creatures that can actually participate in our existence and create it. That's something I've been doing. It was an experiment, and it works."
-Lizzie West

| Lizzie West's catchy compositions are reason enough to like the still relatively unknown singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. She doesn't hide behind a glossy image, and has the courage to be true to herself while inspiring listeners to do likewise and follow their own path in life. |
 |
| With her self-titled EP (2002) and full-length debut Holy Road: Freedom Songs (2003) on Warner Brothers Records, Lizzie has built a solid fan base throughout the U.S. Her music has received national exposure via radio play of her recent singles "Dusty Turnaround" and "Tin Drum," as well as being heard on popular TV series like Dawson's Creek and Alias. |

Lizzie West was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1973. She spent much of her early adult life traveling across the U.S., writing stories and plays as she wandered around the country. While in Nashville in 1995, she purchased her first guitar, and, as she herself put it, the songs "all came flooding out."
Upon her return to New York City in 1996, she began performing her songs on street corners, subways and her sister's bar in Brooklyn. West had dreams of reaching a larger audience than the local commuters and bar patrons, and was determined to make her dream a reality. An early version of Holy Road was released independently in 1999, a solo project with handmade packaging.
Things exploded for the singer-songwriter in 2000, when she embarked upon her first tour of America, performing in bars and small clubs across the nation that summer. She also appeared at BMI's National Folk Alliance talent showcase, and sang the National Anthem for the Women's Liberty basketball game at Madison Square Garden. She gained national exposure when she appeared in a commercial for IAM.com, directed by none other than Spike Lee, in which she performed "Holy Road."
West hit the road again in April 2001, touring the U.S. from coast to coast with the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band and Double Trouble, which was capped off by a triumphant homecoming at New York City's Beacon Theater. In addition to getting her name and music out among the public, she also caught the attention of James Dowdall, an A&R representative for major label Warner Brothers Records.
In August 2001, West signed a multi-album recording deal with Warner Brothers. Her recording of "Chariot's Rise" was featured on the soundtrack of Steven Shainberg's Secretary (2002), alongside her musical hero and guru, Leonard Cohen. Her cover of Cohen's "I'm Your Man" appeared on her self-titled EP, released in November 2002, which also included three original Lizzie West compositions.
One of the EP's tunes, "Sometime," was used in the series Dawson's Creek. The same song was also heard on the soundtrack of the HBO feature Rock The Boat. Her full-length debut, Holy Road: Freedom Songs was recorded in L.A. during the summer of 2002, and released in April of the following year. The album has since received positive reviews and expanded her fan base across the globe.
West and her three-piece band, the Gangs of Kosmos, toured to support the album, including several summer dates opening for Chris Isaak. As the new TV season began in the fall, her music was heard on the WB's Everwood and NBC's Third Watch. Meanwhile, documentary filmmaker Atar Schimmel, who has been filming West since her first tour in 2000, continues to follow the performer around for the work in progress entitled Holy Road: The Movie. The film is about Lizzie, her work, her tours, and her journey to "find Leonard Cohen." |
