Lisa Scott Lee was born on November 5th, 1975, in the heyday of the disco era, in the northern Welsh town of St. Asaph. She grew up with her parents and three brothers in the nearby coastal resort town of Rhyl, famous for its beaches.
She was a fiery little girl, always getting into trouble and taking the limelight whenever she could. Her father was a photographer, and Lisa would often model for him, which would prepare her for the eventual throngs of paparazzi. In fact, Lisa's parents always told her she would make it big one day.
As a teenager, Lisa Scott Lee was determined to become a star. She sang and danced at every opportunity, even commanding the stage at family weddings and parties. No less a stunner, she became a beauty queen, earning the titles of Miss Rhyl and Miss Abergele in different beauty pageants.
Even in school she shone, especially in music, dance and theater classes. One year, she played the enviable roles of Marty in Grease and Blousy in Bugsy Malone.
But Wales was starting to get too small for her. At 17, she moved to London to compete for the big time. She attended the prestigious Italia Conti stage school where she took daily singing and dancing classes, living in a cramped youth hostel since she couldn't afford the school's dorm rent.
Her lucky break would come shortly after graduation, in 1997. Leafing through The Stage magazine, she fell upon an ad announcing auditions for a five-member band. This band, for which she would beat thousands of aspirants hands down, was STEPS, one of Britain's biggest recent pop phenomena. Lisa would become known, for five years, as the naughtier party girl of the band.
Their first big hit, "5-6-7-8," stayed in the UK's Top 40 for three months and sold over a quarter million copies. That was soon surpassed in 1999, with the single "Heartbeat/Tragedy." 16 weeks in the Top 40 chart and over one million copies sold flung them into permanent British fame. |
