Linda Eder was born prematurely on February 3rd, 1961, in Tuscon, Arizona, while her parents were on vacation there. She was raised on a farm in Garrison, Minnesota, where the shy Linda first tried out her vocal talents on the animals. By the time she was going to high school in Brainerd, Minnesota, she had a number of talents blossoming: in addition to singing, Linda had a passion for drawing and painting. But her desire to sing won out, thanks in part to the inspiration of her high school music teacher. Linda played Mother Abbess in her school's production of The Sound of Music when she was 18.
When she was 20, Linda got her first professional gig, singing at a local Holiday Inn, the same day President Reagan was shot. Linda went on to sing regularly at a Minneapolis nightclub, and by age 26, she had her own show at Harrah's Casino in Atlantic City, four shows a night, six nights a week.
In 1987, Linda tried out for the TV talent show Star Search, and won a spot on the first episode of that show's 1988 season. Hoping to win one show, Linda proved unbeatable for an unprecedented 12-week run: Star Search producers were at a loss to find anyone who could stand a chance against her. One producer even sent a tape of Linda to composer Frank Wildhorn, who helped Linda get a recording deal and cast her in his new musical version of Jekyll & Hyde.
Linda made her professional stage debut in 1990 as Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas. In the many years that she played the role, Linda released numerous albums, including Linda Eder (RCA, 1991), And So Much More (Angel, 1994) as well as studio recordings of Jekyll & Hyde (RCA, 1990), The Scarlet Pimpernel (Angel, 1992), and Jekyll & Hyde: the Complete Work (Atlantic, 1995).
In April 1997, Jekyll & Hyde made its way to New York City, and Linda made her Broadway debut, for which she won a Theater World Award. This success coincided with the release of Linda's first solo album with Atlantic, called It's Time. The time was also right for love. Linda and Frank Wildhorn had been close since their first collaboration, and on May 3rd, 1998, the two were married. On August 30th of that year, Linda left Jekyll & Hyde after a memorable farewell performance.
On August 23rd, 1999, Linda gave birth to a son, Jake, one month before releasing It's No Secret Anymore. She was on the road soon after, and even brought out her 6-month-old boy for an emotional curtain call before a sold-out Carnegie Hall audience. Linda successfully balanced career and family, raising her son while releasing Christmas Stays the Same (2000), Gold (2002), and Broadway, My Way (2003). In the summer of 2003, Linda was on stage again, this time at the Norma Terris Theater in Chester, Connecticut, in Camille Claudel, the new musical by Frank Wildhorn about the mistress and muse of sculptor Auguste Rodin. |
