"Oh yeah. We're definitely a pop act. I don't think you could call us R&B. But within the pop formula we're trying to do something different. We all agree that we don't want to churn out formulaic pop..."

| At first disregarded by the public for failing to win in the search for a new UK pop group on the hit reality series Popstars, five participants banded together, formed Liberty X and released the highly touted album, Thinking It Over. Fans from all over the world praised the hot group's efforts after hearing hits like "Doin' It" and "Just A Little." |
 |
| These five talented Brits came together after losing out on Popstars (the non-democratic version of American Idol, or Pop Idol, as it's known in the UK) to break the mold of typical pop groups. With catchy R&B grooves and a string of top 20 tracks, Liberty X is proof that winning isn't everything. |

After going through many tense moments while participating in the British TV show Popstars (the reality series where aspiring pop stars are selected to be, well, pop stars), Michelle Heaton, Jessica Taylor, Kelli Young, Kevin Simm, and Tony Lundon were cut from the competition after making the final ten. Disappointment lingered for the few months following the show's final episode, but the ups and downs of the winning pop group Hear'Say showed them that perhaps losing was for the best. All five "rejects" were unwilling to turn their backs on a dream, and so, with similar goals in mind, they teamed up.
Forming the group Liberty X (then simply "Liberty"), they shopped around a six-track demo, dismissing labels that came asking for solo acts. Finally, an impressed Richard Branson (the man behind the Virgin empire) signed them to his V2 Records label. Using their infectious R&B beats as a recipe for success, the five singers began work on the first of a six-album contract.
Already semi-celebrities thanks to their Popstars appearance, Liberty X's first single "Thinking It Over" drew more attention than ever expected. It entered the charts at No. 5, stayed in the top 20 for over four weeks and topped the 100,000 mark in sales. The great start continued as fans ate up the second release, "Doin' It," in anticipation of Liberty X's album release.
Unfortunately, a bump in the road was in sight as another band named Liberty took the pop sensation to court over rights to the name. The appointed judge gave the unknown band their name back and left the quintet without an identity. Fortunately, they rebounded quickly, and simply chose to add an 'X' to Liberty so that fans would not lose sight of their favorite young Brits. |
