Leona Kristina Naess is a big-city girl; she was born in New York on July 31, 1974, but was raised in London. From the moment of her birth until her teens, Leona lived a life of luxury thanks to her father Arne Naess Jr., a Norwegian shipping magnate, and her mother Filippa Kumlin D'Orey, a prominent Swedish designer. Sadly, money was often in greater supply than love, and the couple officially divorced when Leona was just 9 years old.
Rather than wallowing in self-pity, Leona turned to music, discovering bands like Joy Division and The Cure as well as folkies like Joni Mitchell. ?Music gave me an identity that was positive," she says, and she soon began writing and composing her own songs. "I wasn't very academic at school," she admits. "Writing and playing music was the only thing I was good at."
Luckily, Leona was very good at it, and she briefly attended the prestigious Purcell School of Music before heading to New York City to study anthropology at NYU. "Going to New York was so important because I met loads of great musicians,? she says. ?I grew up a lot too. It's the best thing I ever did. I got the chance to study, learn about myself and pursue my music.? |
