| We're smitten with KT Tunstall's unique voice and brash, no-nonsense personality. It's truly impressive how much attitude and fun-loving stamina are contained in such a pretty, petite package. |

Kate "KT" Tunstall was born on June 23, 1975 in Edinburgh, Scotland. When she was 18 days old, KT was adopted and raised by David and Rosemary Tunstall, a pair of scientists, in the college town of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. She has two brothers, Joe and Dan; the latter is congenitally deaf and is now a bronze medalist on the British Olympic Deaf Tennis Team.
Having a family member with a hearing aid meant that KT's childhood home was not musical, or even noisy. The family had no stereo or television. Regardless, KT directed her energies toward music and performance. At 7, she learned piano, followed in later years by flute and guitar. By the time she was 15, KT had joined a local theater group and had found her singing voice. She spent her time off school touring Scotland with various bands and seeing Europe by train, and at 17, she went to America after winning a scholarship to Connecticut's Kent School.
KT returned to Britain, and during the mid-1990s, earned a performing arts degree at Royal Holloway College in London. In 1998, she moved back to Scotland and decided to track down her birth parents. KT found her mother living in Edinburgh, and although she couldn't find him, she learned that her birth father was an Irish singer. The experience was difficult, but ultimately rewarding for KT, who learned some of the reasons behind her own creative talents.
KT spent a number of years touring in Scotland and abroad with The Fence Collective, a group of folk singers, but she was often living hand-to-mouth. In 2002, she decided to return to London and forge a solo career. After a recording deal with Columbia fell through, KT's options seemed to dwindle, as many felt that she -- at 27 -- was too old. |
