Kelly de Almeida Alfonso was born on March 3, 1983, in Rio de Janeiro, and is of Portuguese descent. Kelly eventually chose the surname "Key" as it represented the "Key to Success."
Her first taste of show business came while she was still a young girl, when she worked for several modeling agencies and posed for numerous magazines. Her beauty apparent early on, Key became a professional model at age 14, and even won the "In Fashion Rio" competition.
After winning even more modeling titles at age 15, Key had bigger dreams. A fan of Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera, she began taking singing lessons, specializing in R&B. Her life would never be the same once her path crossed that of Dalmo Belloti, who at the time was a manager at Sony Music and a friend of the family. Struck by the sensuality he heard in her voice and her determination to succeed, he quickly took her under his wing.
Such talent led Key to record her first album at 17 for Warner Music. The album was produced by renowned Brazilian DJ Cuca (known for his Midas touch in the R&B and pop genres) and spawned hits like "Escondido" ("Hidden") and "Baba" ("Drool").
The success of Kelly Key, which has already sold more than 300,000 copies, has made her a huge star in her country and Portugal with no signs of waning. Although she is happy with her career choice, Key claims that if she couldn't be a singer, she'd be a veterinarian. But for now, she is happy as a pop star and the mother of young Suzana.
