| Katy's debut album, Because I Can, was a solid seller when it hit shelves in January 2004. Her angst-ridden songs resonated with younger audiences and her intricate melodies delighted critics. Pleasing everybody, Rose was able to draw comparisons to Liz Phair, whom she ended up touring with soon after her album was released. Subsequent tours around the world, and soundtrack work for Agent Cody Banks and Thirteen, have helped Rose become one of the brightest young stars around. |

Born on January 27, 1987, Kathryn Rosemary Bullard, a.k.a. Katy Rose, is a native of Tarzana, California. From a very young age, Katy experienced a childhood different from most of her peers at the private Catholic school she attended. Her father, Kim Bullard, was a session keyboardist and exposed her to a life of travel, parties in Los Angeles and rock. Rose's mother was a backup singer and had a significant musical influence on her daughter as well.
Thanks to this lineage, making music was a natural act for Katy. Starting in high school, she used to jot ideas, prose and rhymes down on paper as a means of expressing her thoughts.
As Katy's teenage years began to get tumultuous -- due to family issues and the natural changes that take place at that age -- writing became more and more important to her.
At 13, Rose began seriously focusing on composing lyrics and her first track ever recorded, "Mermaid Jane," was written during this time. Though it never made her album, it certainly serves as a benchmark for Katy.
Inspired by the amount of drama in her life, she reached a creative peak during the next two years, writing most of the tracks that would eventually appear on her record. |
