Katie Melua was born in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia on September 16, 1984. She spent her infant years in the capital city of Tbilisi, then later moved to the seaside community of Batumi, located on the Black Sea. Her family made an even bigger move in 1993, when Katie's father, a heart specialist, was offered a position in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Melua clan set off for the Ulster capital, where they would reside for five years before moving again, this time to Southeast London.
When she was 15, Katie entered a talent contest called Stars Up Their Nose, sponsored by ITV, an independent British TV channel. She won with her rendition of "Without You," the classic '70s ballad that had recently been covered by one of her singing idols, Mariah Carey. In addition to taking home the prizes of an armchair and bedroom makeover, the experience of performing on live TV proved invaluable to Katie.
For her last years of high school, Katie attended the Brit School for the Performing Arts in Croydon, where she concentrated on music. She began composing original songs at the age of 16, after hearing the late American singer Eva Cassidy. Cassidy's cool, stripped-down versions of popular tunes were a major influence on Katie, and she wrote the song "Faraway Voice" in tribute to her. |
