| A classically trained mezzo-soprano, Katherine Jenkins already has a few albums under her belt: 2004's Premiere and Second Nature, and 2005's Living A Dream. She's performed everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Royal Albert Hall, but she still makes time to sing the national anthem at soccer matches at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in her native Wales. |

Katherine Jenkins was born on June 29, 1980, in Neath, West Glamorgan, Wales. Growing up in a council house (a kind of public housing building common in the UK), Katherine was first attracted to pop music. But by the time she was 7, Katherine had fallen in love with classical music. She took piano lessons and joined the local choir.
For the next 10 years, Katherine distinguished herself locally as a chorister, competing -- and often winning -- various competitions for Choirgirl of the Year. Starting in 1990, Katherine was a member of the Royal School of Church Music Cathedral Singers for six years. She also spent three years as a member of the National Youth Choir of Wales. The death of her father, Selwyn Jenkins, spurred her to pursue music even more passionately, and when she was 17, she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Katherine took on a number of operatic roles at the RAM, in addition to studying Italian, German, French, and Russian. After graduating with honors, Katherine decided to press on with post-graduate studies in opera, but she needed to raise the money, so she worked as a singing teacher in Hertfordshire. Later, Katherine's mother sent in some pictures of her to a competition to find The Face of Wales, and Katherine ended up winning, which allowed her to supplement her income as a model, in addition to teaching.
After finishing school in 2003, Katherine was immediately offered an unprecedented six-album, seven-figure recording contract with Universal Classics. It was the biggest record deal in UK classical recording history. That same year, she sang at Westminster Cathedral in honor of Pope John Paul II's Silver Jubilee, and made her debut at the Sydney Opera House. She also made her first appearance singing the Welsh national anthem at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium |
