| A singer who covers a wide variety of styles and genres, k.d. lang has won multiple Grammy and Juno awards for her music. She has steadily put out 10 records in nearly 20 years, and is best known for her 1992 hit album, Ingenue |

| Not only is k.d. incomparably gifted, but she has a doggedly independent spirit, refusing to fit into any tried-and-true pattern of success. Her disdain for complacency and her constant drive to find new musical worlds to conquer make her a true artist. |

Born on November 2nd, 1961, Katherine Dawn Lang grew up in the small town of Consort, Alberta, Canada. In high school, she excelled in music, learning guitar and piano, and in sports, winning a javelin competition.
Heavily influenced by the music of Patsy Cline, k.d. lang enrolled in Red Deer College to study music, where she starred in a theatrical production based on Cline's life. After graduating, she moved to Edmonton, where she formed a band called the Reclines.
In 1983, k.d. lang recorded a solo single, "Friday Dance Promenade," and the following year she recorded a complete album, A Truly Western Experience. Singles from the album garnered much airplay in Canada, especially on college radio and MuchMusic, and k.d.'s reputation as a gifted and unusual performer grew steadily. She was so successful that in 1985, she was awarded a Juno for Most Promising Female.
The buzz k.d. was generating north of the border caught the attention of Sire Records, with whom k.d. signed for worldwide distribution in 1986. k.d. lang released Angel with a Lariat the next year, which was a bigger hit in Canada than in the US, as Nashville purists disapproved of k.d.'s brand of country music.
The following year, k.d. performed a duet with Roy Orbison called "Crying," which provided some additional exposure. Her next release, Shadowland (1988), was an even greater success, and went gold. This album was produced by none other than Patsy Cline's producer, Owen Bradley, who was impressed by k.d. lang's talent and artistry. This album was followed by Absolute Torch and Twang, for which k.d. earned a Grammy award in 1989, for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. |
