"I just look for lyrics that are real. That's the basis for all my songs. The lyrics have to mean something to me."
-Julie Roberts

 |
| Not to be confused with "Julia," Julie Roberts has earned fame as a promising new female country-music talent after releasing, in the spring of 2004, her debut album, Julie Roberts, which features hits like "Break Down Here" and "No Way Out." |
 |
| We have to tip our cowboy hats to Julie Roberts for her perseverance in going after her musical dream. In spite of good looks and loads of talent, she has too much integrity and humility to take any shortcuts to the top. |

Julie Roberts was born in 1979 and raised in Lancaster, South Carolina. The daughter of an engineer and an accountant, she began singing along to country songs on the radio when she was only 3 years old. Growing up, she sang in preschool plays, school choirs, and even a production of My Fair Lady at a summer camp for singers.
Soon Julie was performing in pageants and talent shows, touring regionally with her mother and aunt. However, her first public appearance, during the talent portion of the Preview Pageant, was less than auspicious.
"I was singing 'Rocky Top' and I burped in the first verse because I was nervous," Julie says. Luckily, that embarrassing beginning didn't deter her, and Julie became a pageant veteran, competing in such contests as Little Miss Lancaster.
While touring in her teens, Julie fell in love with the blues after performing with some old bluesmen. That experience helped broaden her range of influences, while summer jobs singing at Carowinds, a theme park in Charlotte, and at Dollywood in East Tennessee, confirmed Julie's love of live performance. But before she could achieve her dreams of being a singing sensation, Julie had to put herself through school.
Julie attended the University of South Carolina at Lancaster for two years on a scholarship, but she finished her education at Nashville's Belmont University because of the music scene there.
Julie had to take out hefty student loans and work as a checkout girl to make ends meet -- but all the while she still pursued music, forming a band that played small clubs and even Nashville Predators hockey games. |
