If you are too serious, you are in danger of having everything taken at face value, instead of being allowed to have layers to it.?

| San Francisco musician Joanna Newsom is bringing the harp to center stage thanks to her enchanting albums The Milk-Eyed Mender (2004) and Ys (2006). The harp "can be really delicate and yet abrasive at the right time,? she says. ?I am producing sounds that people are not used to hearing.? |
 |
| Joanna?s lyrics are a combination of whimsical imagery and an exact command of the English language. ?I know exactly what I want to convey, and then I obsess over saying it in a certain way,? she says. |

Music has always played an important role in Joanna Newsom?s life. Born 1982 in the tiny town of Nevada City, California, she recalls growing up in a home filled with melodies. ?My earliest musical memories are of my mom practicing piano, and my little sister and me dancing around her for hours, making up little pantomimes to Chopin and Satie? she says.
Naturally, it didn?t take her long to discover her own musical talents and Joanna soon began playing the harp at the age of 8. Her proficiency with the oversized instrument eventually led her to attend Mills College in Oakland, California, where she studied to become a composer. Although Joanna?s heart was in the right place, the college?s unrelenting emphasis on classical music failed to click with her newfound folk sensibilities, leaving her to seek solace in her creative writing classes instead.
Although Mills College may have been a disappointment academically, it proved to be a godsend socially as Joanna soon met fellow student Noah Georgeson. The pair immediately hit it off and within a matter of weeks Joanna was playing keyboards in his successful indie rock band, The Pleased.
When she wasn?t busy with the band, Joanna continued to play her harp and she was eventually invited to open up for prominent indie acts like Devendra Banhart, Bonnie Prince Billy and Cat Power. In fact, the reaction to her light and lilting songs was so overwhelmingly positive that she soon began selling out Bay Area venues on her own. |
