| More than a cross-over artist, and more than a teen sensation, Jennifer is a big-hearted Texan whom we find muy caliente. |

Jennifer Pena was born on September 17, 1983 in San Antonio, Texas. While still an infant, she and her family moved to Corpus Christi. By the age of 6, Jennifer's knack for musical performance was evident, as she frequently sang country songs at informal get-togethers and at children's singing contests within the Tejano musical community. At the age of 11, she was so moved by the Bette Midler film Beaches, that it convinced her for once and for all that singing was her true calling.
It had better be, given her monumental 1995 debut: singing to some 30,000 spectators, in tribute to her hero Selena, at the Houston Astrodome. For herself and the world watching, this was the moment of truth that confirmed that she had the talent and courage to wow enormous pop audiences. This, in turn, led to a formidable business arrangement with Q Productions, a promotion company run by Selena's father. Jennifer would stay with Q for seven years.
The promoters brought her to EMI's Latin music division early on, clinching a deal for Jennifer. Dulzura, her debut album, soon followed. With its picante single "Ven a Mi," the record brought her much attention, high praise, and a Tejano Music Award for Female Artist of the year. At just 14 years of age, she also began to explore the business potential of her field, endorsing the products of the Hygeia Dairy Corporation.
The quickly forthcoming follow-up album, Jennifer, earned a similar response in 1997. This time, though, the hit was a cover, a version of Rick James's "Superfreak." Among her increasing claims on notoriety were her vocal contributions to the film Selena. Maintaining productivity, she released her third record, Mariposa, in 1998. It earned her a Grammy nod. |
