"I read articles and they'll pit me against Lil' Kim like I'm going to smash them down. I never said any of that; I never said I didn't like Kim or Foxy [Brown]. I think the media places a slant on it: "Yeah, she's so badass! She's gonna beat them all up! She keeps her clothes on!" I mean, that's just me."

| Jean first emerged from New York's underground hip-hop scene as a member of the group Natural Resource, who released the 12" Negro League Baseball in 1997. From here, she struggled to make a name for herself, putting together an independently-produced album, Attack of the Attacking Things, in 2002. Collaborations with the likes of The Roots, Talib Kweli and the Herbaliser have helped move Jean into the public eye, and the rapper subsequently released This Week, her second album, in 2004. |
 |
| Opinionated, feisty and incredibly talented, Jean Grae is one of hip-hop's most unheralded emcees. We've noticed her thanks to her amazing flow, original beats and poetic, creative lyrics. |

Born in South Africa in 1976, Jean Grae (née Tsidi Ibrahim) and her family escaped the Soweto riots of the same year and moved to New York City when she was just 3 months old. Both of Jean's parents were teachers who moonlighted as jazz musicians, and their talent and struggle to balance their careers with their passions greatly inspired her.
Jean's mother also instilled in her a belief in the power of knowledge and education, and as a result, Jean was a bright child. She learned to read at the age of 3 and, following in her parents' footsteps, developed a love for music and the performing arts. Jean was also an excellent dancer, and by age 13 she had become the youngest person accepted to Alvin Ailey's renowned second dance company. Jean also harbored a love of singing, but the talent had not yet manifested itself in a strong enough way for her to feel comfortable showing it off. |
