Think about it, pretty much anyone can worship pop divas and Hollywood starlets, but who really knows about Broadway stars? Mentioning her name makes us look refined and chicks dig that! |

Adena Mentzel was born on May 30th, 1971, in Long Island, New York. She changed her name over the years to Idina Menzel because no one could pronounce it right. Idina, her younger sister Cara, and her parents Stuart and Helene moved from Queens to New Jersey and back to Long Island by the time Idina was in second grade.
Singing was clearly in her blood, as she was singing from the tender age of 5. One day, she started harmonizing without ever having learned how to do so, and her teachers encouraged her to hone her skills.
At the age of 8, she was taken under the wing of a voice teacher. She then started performing in school productions such as The Wizard of Oz and The Pirates of Penzance. By the mid-'80s, she moved up to Syosset High School, and although she was still studying classical music, she found herself more inspired by R&B singers like Aretha Franklin, Chaka Kahn and Etta James.
She was desperately in need of an audience for her newly discovered love of popular music. As a result, Idina started performing in clubs in Long Island and Westchester.
While she was earning pocket money working at a local deli, Menzel auditioned for a wedding band, becoming its lead singer; however, as she was only 15 years old, she lied about her age to get the gig. This endeavor allowed her to expand her repertoire, as she had to switch from Motown to jazz from one minute to the next.
As Idina began writing her own songs, she enrolled in NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. The music program didn't strike her fancy, so she signed up for drama instead. Menzel started her own band as an outlet for her songwriting and soon she spent more time in clubs like CBGB's, Don Hill's and the Bitter End than she did in class. She wanted to get a record deal, but that proved harder than she thought.
After getting her Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama, she returned to singing at weddings for a while. Then in 1995, she saw that there was an audition for a new off-Broadway musical by Jonathan Larson. The show was called Rent and Larson realized Idina would be perfect for the part of Maureen Johnson, the vampy performance artist. |
