Helena Paparizou was born on January 31, 1982, in Gothenburg, Sweden. The daughter of Greek parents, she grew up learning their native language and embracing their distinctively Mediterranean culture. Like most Greek children, she was also instilled with an appreciation for the arts and soon showed a flair for dancing, singing and acting.
By the time she was 17, Helena decided to explore her interests even further and formed a group called Antique with her childhood friend, Nikos Panagiotidis. Both musicians had been raised in Sweden by Greek parents and their dance-pop reflected that unique fusion. Their sweet melodies and surprising professionalism soon attracted industry interest, and they were promptly signed by Sweden's Bonnier record label.
With Bonnier now guiding their career, Helena and Nikos released their first single, the upbeat "Opa-Opa," in August of 1999. The song became an instant hit, making it to the Top 5 of the Swedish charts en route to being certified platinum. The subsequent single, "Dinata Dinata," and the album, Mera Me Ti Mera, followed later that year. |
