“For me, music is in the choice of what not to play as much as in what you’ve chosen to play.”--Feist

| Feist is one of Canada’s leading singer-songwriters thanks to her critically acclaimed 2004 album Let It Die. In addition to her spectacular solo efforts, she has also collaborated with Broken Social Scene, Peaches, Kings of Convenience and The New Deal. |

| Feist’s versatility is unrivalled in today’s music industry. The Canadian chanteuse has thus far played in punk bands, produced toe-tapping pop hits and rapped in Spanish while operating a sock puppet. "Each one of those projects I always conceived as being part of my career," she says. "I've never worked on anything for long unless I loved it, and if you love something for long enough you take ownership of it.” |

Leslie Feist was born on February 13, 1976 in Amherst, Nova Scotia. However, she and her family soon went west, and she spent the majority of her childhood in the prairie towns of Regina and Calgary. It was in the latter city, Canada’s so-called “Cow Town,” that she formed her first band, a punk group called Placebo. As she recalls, “My first proper gig was “opening” for the Ramones at an outdoor festival when my high school punk band won a battle of the bands contest.”
That early taste of success convinced Feist that her future was in music and she spent the next five years of her life touring the country screaming into a microphone. Her punk lifestyle may have continued unabated had she not lost her voice in the midst of her first cross-Canada tour. Unable to receive the treatment she needed in Calgary, Feist moved to Toronto in 1998 to put her career back on track.
Although it would turn out to be a fortuitous move, her first year in the nation’s biggest city proved to be an isolating experience. “Not knowing a soul in Toronto I spent six months in a dark basement apartment with a 4-track and having been told not to sing I got a guitar to do it for me,” she recalls. It was during this time that she expanded her musical tastes while also learning to master her instrument. |
