Faith Evans
"I'm really an inner spirit that only makes itself known through the music. A lot of people think I'm an introvert, or quiet and moody. I've even heard some people say that there's a certain mystery or darkness about me. I'm not that way. I'm just really into what I do."

-Faith Evans

Date of Birth: June 10, 1973
Birthplace: Lakeland, Florida

Biography
Born in Lakeland, Florida on June 10, 1973, Faith Evans moved to Newark, New Jersey at a young age and stayed there throughout her childhood and beyond. During her early schools years and into secondary education, she participated in many musicals, constantly training her voice since the age of two by participating in the local churches' Gospel choirs. Despite blowing people away with her musical prowess, Evans stuck with school through to university, gaining a full scholarship to Fordham University.

After studying marketing for one year, she could no longer deny her abilities as a talented singer. Her initial contributions to the music world were behind the scenes, writing songs for Mary J. Blige and becoming a backup singer for acts like Color Me Badd and Pebbles. Her big breakthrough came when producer/rapper Sean "P. Diddy" Combs (known as "Puff Daddy" at the time) heard her voice and was immediately captivated. He signed her to his Bad Boy label; Faith was the first woman to become part of the now famous stable of artists.

In 1995, Evans released her self-titled debut album. It was a great start for Evans, as the album eventually went platinum with the help of hit singles like "Soon As I Get Home" and "You Used To Love Me." That same year, her baptism into the music industry was complete after she married legendary rapper Notorious B.I.G. (Christopher Wallace) mere days after having met him. His huge single "One More Chance" featured his new wife's voice in the chorus, but unfortunately, the matrimony was not meant to be.

With a son on the way, Evans watched as her husband got caught up in an East vs. West Coast rap war that ended in his tragic murder on March 9th, 1997. In the six months that followed the shooting, Evans suffered through her toughest times (despite the fact that Evans and Wallace had separated a few months before his death), questioning the industry she was in.

Fortunately, she eventually dealt with the tragedy constructively, looking at it as a life lesson and becoming a stronger woman as a result. Her biggest statement about her husband's death came in the form of music: "I'll Be Missing You," by Puff Daddy and featuring 112 and Faith Evans, was a touching single that garnered an MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Video and a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, and became a worldwide anthem for those grieving the loss of a loved one.
