Esthero is a trip-hop/electronica duo consisting of Esthero (née Jen-Bea Englishman) and Doc, whose real name is Martin McKinney.
Esthero (the self-proclaimed slacker) hails from a small town in Southern Ontario, Canada, where she was raised in a rather musical family. Her father was formerly a musician in the '60s band Teak Wood, while her brother, Jim Englishman, is part of the band Tomorrow the World.
Esthero headed to Toronto at the age of 16, in order to live on her own. After months of working at a Toronto café in order to support herself, and singing at open-mic night at a folk club, Esthero met Doc through mutual acquaintances.
Doc hails from St. Paul, Minnesota (close to where fellow funkmeister, Prince, calls home). He fell in love with Toronto after having won tickets to catch the World Series there.
The duo came together thanks to a friend of a friend -- they met, and music history was made.
Esthero and Doc started out by recording one track after another in Doc's Toronto apartment, when they thought of going the independent route; luckily, they were signed to Sony's Epic label.
The group's debut, Breath From Another, was released in 1998, and Esthero released the hit single, "Heaven Sent". Citing Björk as the singer's biggest musical influence, Breath From Another fuses pop, trip-hop, drum 'n' bass, and jazz.
The sensuous jazzy album, which has drawn comparisons to those of Portishead and Sade, has made a huge impression on the music scene, and has earned much critical praise.
With Esthero's silky, strong voice and Doc's electronic beats, the duo has found the perfect medicine: eccentric and sensuous sounds. |
