"I'm sure it sounds cliché, but I don't know how we could grow as individuals and not mature artistically."

| From their "(My Lovin') Never Gonna Get It" (which became our girlfriend's anthem) to our favorite, "Whatta Man", En Vogue has been voguing all the way to the Grammy, Soul Train and MTV Awards. |

| These Funky Divas have been making us want to get up and dance since the early 90's, and have continued to groove throughout the decade despite the competition. |

In the tradition of all-female groups like the Spice Girls, the women of En Vogue auditioned to form the soulful sounding "girl group" they are famous for today. Dawn Robinson, Terry Ellis, Cindy Heron and Maxine Jones, hailing from Connecticut, Texas, San Francisco, and New Jersey respectively, were united in Oakland, California.
These four talented beauties joined forces after auditioning for Denzil 'Denny' Foster and Thomas McElroy; the duo who worked together in Club Nouveau and the Timex Social Club. Foster and McElroy wanted to form a girl group to produce and write material for, combining the groovy sound of old-school R&B with the fresh sound of hip-hop and rap. In October 1988, En Vogue was formed, including only one member with previous showbiz experience -- Cindy Herron won Miss San Francisco and Miss Black California pageants and worked as an actress as well.
En Vogue's debut album, Born to Sing, released in 1990, spawned three consecutive #1 R&B hits and sold more than 1 million copies. Two years later the foursome released their second album, which tripled in sales compared to their debut album with 3 million copies sold.
The group, heavily influenced by Chaka Khan, had their own influence on female groups such as SWV, Jade and TLC as they helped start the New Jill Swing movement. The Funky Divas were showing the world that their lovin' is not something that comes easily with the #1 R&B hit "My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)". "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and "Free Your Mind" were also released from Funky Divas and found their places on the top 10/pop hits charts.
Awards and nominations immediately followed: the group won three MTV music awards for the video "Free Your Mind," earned five Grammy nominations, won an American Music Award, and were named Soul Train's Entertainers of the Year Award in 1992. Not only did the foursome appear in Rolling Stone, Vogue and Entertainment Weekly, they also appeared on The Tonight Show and The Arsenio Hall Show. The group even appeared in a Diet Coke commercial directed by none other than Spike Lee. |
