"My career is not about money. Maybe what I have to offer through my music is an awakening of new things in other people. Because I see that for me, day by day, music educates me, transforms me and makes me strong."

| Having put out her fourth album, Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy, in 2004, Ely may not be a familiar name to most North Americans, but with hits like "Ojos Claros, Labios Rosas" and "Quiéreme Mucho” under her belt, that is destined to change. |
 |
| With her sultry voice and exotic looks, Ely Guerra has established herself as the next big Latin import (think Shakira minus the excessive hip shaking). |

Ely Guerra was born on February 13, 1972 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The daughter of a professional soccer player, Ely -- who was raised in Guadalajara -- enjoyed a privileged childhood that was fraught with various extracurricular activities. Music wasn’t a big part of her household; however, it didn’t take long for Ely to begin her own exploration of this artistic pursuit. By the age of 10, Ely had begun writing her own songs and had even taught herself how to play the guitar.
In the late ‘80s, at the age of 15, Ely realized that there weren’t too many opportunities for singer-songwriters in Guadalajara and decided to move to Mexico City to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional singer. After performing in and around the city, Ely caught the eye of famed label BMG, which wasted no time in signing the up-and-coming songstress to a record deal. She spent two years working on her self-titled debut, and though the album was not quite the runaway success she had been hoping for, it firmly established young Ely as a talented new face in the industry.
Unhappy with the sales of her first album, Ely began looking around for a different record label and eventually settled on EMI. Shortly thereafter, Ely decided to give her creative juices a jolt by moving to London, where she began working on her second album. In 1997, Ely released her sophomore effort, Pa’ Morirse de Amor, and was pleasantly surprised when it became an instant hit, thanks primarily to the strength of the first single, the catchy “Angel de Fuego.” |
