Delta Goodrem was born in Sydney, Australia on November 9, 1984. She knew at a very young age that she was destined to perform, and told her parents, Denis and Lea, that she wanted to act when she was only 7. They wasted no time, and enrolled her in a drama school, and her career took off from there. When her parents saw that she was serious about her chosen profession, they offered to take her to auditions, and young Delta was happy to oblige.
While it's obvious she wasn't going to get to play Lady Macbeth on Broadway -- not right then anyway -- there was still ample work for Delta. She began acting in television commercials for both the Australian and American markets, most notably in an ad for Galoob toys, and she was the face of Nesquik for four years. During the same period, she also guest-starred on popular Australian TV shows like A Country Practice, Police Rescue, and Hey Dad.
But as much as she enjoyed acting, it was music that she loved the most. She began playing piano when she was 8 years old, and wanted to make music her life. To get the ball rolling, she saved all her acting money and made a demo CD when she was 12. On the demo, she included five songs she had written herself, as well as the Australian national anthem, since it was her dream to sing it at an AFL (Australian Football League) game.
Her favorite football team was the Sydney Swans and so she decided to send them a copy of her demo. The team's management was so impressed with what it heard that it chose to forward the CD to one of the team's biggest supporters, who was none other than legendary Australian manager, Glenn Wheatley, who is responsible for launching the careers of John Farnham and the Little River Band.

She was 13 when Wheatley began to help her hone her musical style, and develop her career. In 2000, while still only 15, Sony Music, recognizing her talent, offered her a record deal. Soon after, Delta released her first single "I Don't Care," but it never went higher than the 64th spot on the ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) charts.
Because this song never achieved greatness, her career stagnated. Consequently, she returned to television in 2002. She got the part of Nina Tucker, a painfully shy schoolgirl who loves to sing but lacks the courage to do so, on the long-running Australian soap opera Neighbours. Delta had to relocate to Melbourne to join the cast, and this move inspired her to write again. She got together with songwriter Audius and in one day they wrote four songs together.
The last song they wrote was "Born to Try" and she recorded it. This coincided with her character on the show recording a demo and she had the producers listen to "Born to Try"; it was exactly the kind of song they needed. On October 11, 2002, the tune aired during the show and the single was released a month later.
"Born to Try" remained on the charts for three months, going triple platinum and making Delta Goodrem a bona fide superstar in her native land. This success was followed by "Lost Without You," "Innocent Eyes" and "Not Me, Not I," which is currently topping Australian charts. Her first album, Innocent Eyes, has gone platinum six times over and hit #1 in Australia. |
